
Internet Terminology
Here are some terms that you may see as you use the Internet.
WWW - World Wide Web, also referred to as the Web. This is the section of the Internet that contains websites and webpages.
HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. This is the method that computers use to load webpages.
HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language, also abbr. HTM. This is the programming language that webpages are written in.
Hyper Text - this is the text that you click on to go to another web page, i.e. a link.
URL - Universal Resource Link. This is a fancy name for a web address, such as www.atstechservices.com, this is the URL for my website.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol. This is the way that you download files to your computer through the Internet.
ISP - Internet Service Provider. A company that provides an Internet connection.
DSL - Digital Subscriber Line. This is essentially a very high speed modem connection that works over your existing phone line.
Server - this is a computer that is setup specifically to have webpages or e-mail that can be accessed anywhere on the Web.
IP Address - Internet Protocol Address. This is number that uniquely identifies a computer on the Intenet, similar to a telephone number.
Cookie - This is a file that websites can place on your computer to, in general, rememeber information about you or your computer, for good or bad, and do such things as:
- remember your account, so you don't have to keep logging in
- remember information you put in a form in case you make a mistake
- track your usage of their, or other websites
